While the cat's away
Best thing about Logan being away on business:
Non-stop Law & Order (on TNT and USA! What the hell? Who needs Tivo?) without moaning and groaning next to me on the sofa.
Worst thing about Logan being away on business:
Really crappy dinners; cooking for just The Pickerson's is unappealing. Can one live on cold cereal with milk for weeks at a time?
No but a JUMBO pizza...will go a long way and is a very good bang for the buck....pizza is almost the perfect meal....:*) Pair it with salad...and you can almost feel healthy! (almost)

Cold cereal with milk! Are you kidding? That is SO much better than what I've been feeding my kids for breakfast since January. I'm too embarrassed to actually write it out plainly. Let's just say that 99% of the breakfasts in this house include a certain familiar brand of "toaster pastry" with the initials "P.T." and leave it at that.

The best thing about my husband being away? Is also Law & Order without the accompanying bitching and moaning, but also Chinese food. He won't eat it, and I love it, so I get it when he's away. Mmmmm...now I want hot and sour soup.

Besides L&O, don't forget Gilmore Girls is on at 4:00 (CST)! It's my new addiction. All work stops at 4:00 and it's cocktail time!
Pancakes are good for dinner too. And scrambled eggs. My kids loved breakfast for dinner when they were that age.

Are you implying that when my husband goes away on business that I'm supposed to feed my kids something MORE than cold cereal?
I have thought of great plan to help reduce the cost of plumbing work:
2 kids + 2 sand box shovels + promise of digging all the way to China!

Ooops. Forgot to say that Gilmore Girls is on the Family channel. But you have to be really fast to change the channel after that, lest you see even a second of the two-hour block of 7th Heaven that immediately follows it.

First of all, have you got those man saving panties ready?
Secondly, yes one can live off of cold cereal for long lengths of time, just ask me and I'll share the horror with you one day.
Third, love me some Law and Orders and we watch them til we see who can guess which one it is by the first 30 seconds of it...sad sad sad we are sad!

I personally could live on cold cereal for a long time!!! My kids love it also!!!
Not that into L&O but could watch Dr. 90210 all the time and not when hubby is around as he rags on me for watching it!!

If one alternates between Ohs, Grape Nuts, and Cinnamon Grahams, then certainly.

I love when DH travels for business...I rent old John Hughes movies or watch improbable disaster movies like Independence Day, Armegeddon or Day After Tomorrow.
I stay up way too late - and take the girls out to eat a lot.

Cold cereal AND Kraft Dinner.

I love your "cooking for the Pickersons" phrase. It's so true. Have fun watching Law and Order!

I love when the Law and Order reruns go way back to the Chris Noth/Jill Hennessey days. Those are my favorites.
I watch them while eating my dinner of cold cereal and milk . . .

I read that as "cold cereal with milk weeds".
yuck.

It's not that I don't like having my husband around but when he's away on business, there is a certain sigh that I enjoy--stay up too late, eat random things at random times for meals, and watch all the bad TV I want without his running commentary.
And every time I'm out of town, all my husband eats is cold cereal and milk. I don't even bother shopping for him.

Strangely enough, my Mr. Sloth is the one who got me hooked on Law & Order...but I still eat crap when he's gone.

Sometimes when my husband is gone, I think things like, "oh, we'll each just get a fork and eat from the serving dish" or "gosh, we haven't had popcorn for dinner in a while." I think milk and cereal is actually quite ambitious.
I've never commented before, but am a longtime reader and just wanted to let you know how much I enjoy your writing. The Pickersons (any relation to the Bickersons?) -- just fantastic!

When my dad was away, my mom would make my sister and me chipped beef on toast (aka chipped shit on a shingle) and we LURVED us some of that stuff. And sometimes we'd have Farina for dinner, too. Yup, we were gross.

You would not believe the amount of Cap'n Crunch my kids and I put away during the 13 months my husband was in Iraq! I wish I had saved the boxes just to take a picture of in the end.

Whenever my husband gets back from a trip, he looks in the fridge and pantry and exclaims in horror at thier emptiness. When were you going to break down and go to the store? he asks. I tell him, not for another three days. You see that can of green beans? Those saltines? The half-full carton of ice cream? That stack of american cheese slices? It's a veritable feast!

We loooove cereal for dinner at my house. It's fortified!

I just spent the last few months living on my own in a new city while my husband finished his phd somewhere else. Weekends then were all about law and order and knitting.

One can absolutely live on cereal and milk for weeks at a time. I would totally do that and cheese sandwiches if my husband weren't around (well, assuming the baby didn't need to eat, too).

Dallas, I was wondering the same thing. Whether the Pickersons and the Bickersons are realated. I love those names, they are so perfectly descriptive.

My dad was out of town a lot when we were kids, but when Mom was gone - it was beanie weenies and tomato sandwiches (white bread, tomato, mayo, salt and pepper). Delicious.

Only if its chocolate milk.

What?!? Logan moans & groans when you watch L&O? Oh man. I feel for you. ;) That makes me appreciate my husband a little more. He usually is the one turning it to A&E so we can watch marathon viewings of L&O. :P
