Hamster Liberation Day
When I show you our 'office' and the mammoth computer and even larger monitor which have consumed an entire corner of our bedroom, I think you'll understand why today is a banner day in Summers Family History. Also for hamsters because hamsters on tiny wheels inside Logan's massive box of a computer have been running it for all these years.
Oh that old computer and I have some memories between us. Today, as I gleefully threw it out the window I said, 'Remember how I'd be writing and right in the middle you'd shut off and go black?"
"Remember how I could sometimes get you to turn back on if I hit you really hard like Fonzie?"
"Remember how I used to cry and swear at you?"
Sigh....gosh those were awesome times.
But not really.
This machine is so lean and beautiful and perfect I don't care if it wants the whole bedroom to itself. We'll sleep on the sofa if that's what it wants. But you see, this computer isn't imposing, it's the kind of household companion who says, "Oh no no no...I don't want to be a bother. I'll just sit over here and do my job. Don't make a fuss over me."
In fact it's so thin and unassuming it will fit into my armoire and we can shut the door and pretend for a little while longer that we aren't crammed into this tiny house and that we're grown ups who don't have to run a thriving freelance company out of a corner in our bedroom.
Rather we'll run a thriving freelance company out of a cabinet in our bedroom.
And that is grown up.
I haven't turned the computer on because it's Logan's technically and he wants to set it up himself and I can respect that. I cried when I got the iBook. I didn't cry actually but I did a little dance and made an odd sound in my throat I've been unable to make before or since that time. So I understand why he wants to be the first to power up the machine.
But this is delicious torture. I keep going into the bedroom, just to, you know, check in and make sure he's comfortable. Thankfully Logan said nothing about licking.

Holy crap, I think I have the same hamster-powered computer, only ours is currently residing in the spare bedroom. I've been trying to decide what to do with it, because you really shouldn't chuck computers out with the trash to hang out in landfills, but who wants a hamster-powered computer?
Oh well, at least all my yarn keeps it company.

"Thankfully Logan said nothing about licking."
:) I can't stop laughing...

Jenn here you can take it to the county's waste management service.

Those Mac's are so sexy.

You can also give it to Office Depot to recycle. It's what we did with old one my parents had. The hamsters in that one died and were starting to stink.

Sweeeeet!
I'm still whipping hamsters. They actually do OK and I'm hoping they don't croak for another couple years.

green with envy. our desktop is even bigger than your old one. probably slower too. when we get the new one (soon! soon! may it be so!) I am SO going all Office Space on the old one. damn it feels good to be a gangsta.

Mmmm, yes, we have a very sexy, very space-considerate one of our own. Trying to convince the spouse that I need its sexy counterpart- a matching laptop- but no luck yet.

We have a G-5. You should not only lick it, but go a little farther. It deserves a hand job at least. It' that good.
My kids love the photo booth option. We take pictures constantly and just email them off to poor unsuspecting people.

he he. don't you have a tripod? can't you get a shot of the licking?

Ooooo. Have you named it? As the proud owner of a new used iBook G4 (Baby Whitey), I share your glee.

This post made me cry a little. From the awesome beauty of that machine and a teensy bit of jealousy.
The death knell is sounding for my 1st production year iBook. Not sure if I'll be able to replace it right away. Gulp.

thanks for posting the photo. How do you like that new funky apple mouse?

I have the 20" iMac. It freaking rocks, but I have to share one little piece of advice. Make sure, when installing any kind of driver, that it is specifically for the intel-based mac. I, being a completel moron, just used the disc that came with the "free with rebate printer" they got me to buy and there was a whole lot of head being slammed into the drywall as my Adobe Photoshop refused to open for several days until I figured out what the problem was. (No one at Apple or at Adobe could figure out the problem.)

Melissa, I hope all 3 of you (You, Logan and the Machine) are very happy together!
God, this comment could SO be misinterpreted!
hahahha

Will the addition of this sexy new computer require you to bust out the "man saving panties?"

Beeeeeeeeeeeautiful. Beautiful! I have Apple envy.

I'm so jealous! I am still using my 6+ year old original iBook..it takes about 10 minutes just to turn on.
Congrats!

Ohhhh... new computer! Droooool! Very nice. I hope you and Logan enjoy it.

Supreme jealousy! I'm making the big switch from PC to MAC in about a month or so... I can't wait for it to happen.

I want to know, did you name it? I love my iMac. It is so nice to me.
Posted by: issa | 2006.05.19 at 03:44 PM
I heart my iMac. My sweet machine make my whole house a little brighter.
Posted by: FRECTIS | 2006.05.20 at 12:29 AM
Iunderstand the licking. I just bought the same iMac for my 12 yr old son. This is what I always hoped a computer would be- slim, attractive, easy to use, with a nice voice, built-in camera and shit- a garage band! I'm getting one for myself next year and pitching this beasty Dell.
