My little lizards.

As requested I made dinner for the three of us last night (Logan had an annual drink-fest golf outing).

Madison complained about this meal as you can imagine since it was made up of all the things she enjoys eating...just in one bowl. Max cemented his undying love for sausage (take that as you will you sick, sick person).

I asked, to get the conversation away from how much Madison hates this dinner, "What animal would you be if you could be any animal?"

Max said, "What animals eat sausage?"

I said, "I'm not sure."

He said, "What about bacon?"

This is why you need two parents....because I couldn't even make up anything to give him as an answer.

Madison said, "I would want to be a house pet, because I don't want to have any predators."

I nodded thoughtfully, because that's such a fitting answer for my daughter.

She went on, "I'm not sure though if I want fur because I really hate to brush my hair. Maybe I'll be a lizard."

Max said, "Do they eat bacon?"

I said, "Yes, yes they do."

Do you ever wonder how she got so picky with her food? I'm in a very similar boat with my daughter and I'm ready to pull my hair out.

Next thing you know, he'll be leaving pieces of bacon around the house, hoping to catch a lizard...

That conversation reminds me of the one I had with my mom when I was Madison's age.

"Mom! Today at lunch, Michele was soooo dumb. We talked about hamburgers coming from cows and what food comes from other animals. She's SO dumb! She didn't know that pigs laid hot dogs! She kept telling me I was wrong! Man is she dumb! Of course pigs lay hot dogs! Sheesh!"

Needless to say, I was very confused when they came up with turkey dogs.

"Turkeys lay eggs...and hot dogs?"

This totally cracks me. Kids make life so intesting, don't they?

I was extremely picky about mixed-up dishes when I was Madison's age. When my mother made tacos, she served mine in a sort of wheel around the plate: an empty shell, a heap of cheese, a mound of meat, a pile of iceberg lettuce. I'm proud to report that I did grow up to eat soup and casseroles and salads like a normal person, so there's hope for Madison yet. I don't even bother trying with my own almost 8-year-old daughter, who has the same dread of things with "ingredients" -- I just serve what she'll eat and assume she'll grow out of it. If not, she'll soon be old enough to prepare her own meals of naked foods that don't touch on the plate. :-)

T. Rex would eat sausage. Of course, T. Rex would also eat Max, but maybe that's not a problem.

LOL!

Sometimes I just can't wait to have kids!

merseydotes

Did you guys actually call it 'Bats and Cobwebs' at the dinner table, and did the kids think that was neat in any way? I saw that recipe and thought, 'I wonder if the clever name actually works.'

Candace

Oh, yeah. I've been there with my daughter. For example, she loves tortillas, chicken, and cheese, but if you put them together in quesadilla form, her head falls off. But! She used to eat hamburgers only if the seperate parts stayed separate, but she's lately been eating them as hamburgers! So there's hope!

She has SUCH a loathing of potatoes, though, that it makes me wonder if there was some sort of mix-up at the hospital.

oh wow, madison is such a little lady. she's so contemplative. very sweet. ;)

and max...max is just plain entertaining.

Strangely this reminds of the Simpsons when Homer is talking to Lisa. He starts listing off animals, "Bacon, sausage, pork" and Lisa says, "Dad those are the same animal!"

He replies, "Oh sure Lisa, like there is some mystical animal..."

I actually make this last night from the recipe you left on Flickr. I put it down in front of my three year old and he started crying. "I don't like this dinner!" Then he threw up. I wish I were kidding.

I think he has the flu, actually. My husband and I enjoyed it once we got cleaned up and the kid in bed.

God, I wish I'd have had a blog to vent on when my own kids were small! Can you believe I went through all this with no ventilation?? HYPERventilation, okay, but not a properly vented environment. This explains a lot.

I have three loinsprings, 2 years or less apart in age. Two of them were born 2 years and 1 day apart. The weird thing is we didn't plan that. Or maybe that would actually be MORE weird.

Mine are now 9, 11 and almost 13 (that age at which my daughter will officially know everything), and they don't say as many cute things about food anymore. Now it's more like, "This sucks!" Not in those words, but I get the hint.

Sigh.

I, too, made this dinner for my family last night. My 5 year old LOVED it! She even had seconds. My only alterations were 4 cloves of garlic instead of 1 (mmmm...garlic!), no sugar and another 6 oz of chicken sausage. We had it again for dinner tonight and my daughter declared it her favorite dinner ever.

Thanks, Melissa!

BTW, I've been reading your posts for ages and just wanted to say that I think you're a fabulous person and a fantastic writer. Sorry Madison won't eat, though!

Michelle

Recipe looks great. I copied and pasted and emailed it to myself so may try it this weekend. Thanks!
I can sympathize with the picky eaters. Lexi is nearly 4 and will eat NOTHING unless it is spaghettios or mac & cheese. Makes meal time MISERABLE when she screams at everything put in front of her. "I don't like this dinner", without ever trying it.
Sigh!
