Until you die!
We threw a wedding shower for my sister this weekend. That's right, seven days after moving in, we hosted a party. My sister's celiac's disease and the insanely busy nature of the last few weeks was a wonderful excuse to keep our celebration simple and involved about a billion dollars worth of sushi from our local Japanese market.
My sister lives in Detroit and so do most of her friends. Our new neighborhood is seriously lacking in any urban grit, in the old neighborhood we had no back yard only a side yard and we also had a few random homeless people or old school shirtless skateboarders with tube socks carrying home a case of light beer.
We're quite fond of the new neighborhood and the lack of grit of course but still when surrounded by urban hipsters I feel a little silly for all the times I've cuddled with the under mount sink in my kitchen.
Oh well, hanging out with the hipsters gave me my first real hangover in around 6 months. That's impressive.
Maddie and Max bought a little gift for Teri and Mike and gave them a very thoughtful card as well.
"You get to be together until you die! Hooray! Love Maddie and Max."
Hooray!
Today the kids and I created simple origami figures in an attempt to burn daylight. Super project! ++++++ Will do again! Also, remember when I told you about the new features at AlphaMom, the name database and the product review/rating features? You can enter to win $1000 just for contributing your hard earned opinion on various products. You should also check out LeahPeah's Keyboard Confidential series. Lots of great conversations from last year's Blogher.
Additionally I started documenting my kitchen organization progress at Ordering Disorder.
There are just over two weeks before schools starts. It's amazing what a shit ton of stress + trampolines + 4-6 kids on your block will do to make your summer fly by.
This also means there are less than two weeks until my sister's wedding. Eee! Her wedding is in the very northern Michigan city of Marquette, which means we'll be leaving in a day or two so we make it in time.

My little son has Celiac, too. But he won't eat sushi just yet, unfortunately.

Hope you have a wonderful time at the wedding!

With the wedding two weeks away, leaving in a day or two will be cutting it close. Hey, its a long way up north. Did you remember to pack both winter and summer clothes? I hear they are checking passports at the bridge! Seriously, you should have a great time here in Marquette! If you need restaurant suggestions or tips on what to do during your stay I would be happy to help out.

We grew up with an Origami expert living across the street, so we had a lot of fun folding paper as kids. Also, we have a weird guy at work who constantly folds origami flowers for one of my female coworkers, even though he's married and very religious. Also creepy.
Have a great time in Marquette. If it weren't so far away from everything I would totally live there. Also, if you need somewhere to eat a meal, try "The Italian Restaurant". It's name may be simple, but the food is delicious. I promise.

My middle daughter has celiac. It is always weird for me to see/hear about others with it. She is almost 7, & was diagnosed @ 1. It really is a cleaner lifestyle. I swear she will outlive us all since she can't eat all our processed garbage!

I just gotta say....I really like this NewImprovedMelissa! THIS Melissa? With the House? In the neighborhood? This gal is quite likable. Keep it coming.

Celiac disease? Get yourself over to glutenfreegirl.blogspot.com for recipes. Shauna is brilliant. And I believe her book comes out soon.

Ah, yes, the celiac's version of take-out pizza: sushi. It's the same at our house. I can't say that I'm complaining. Can she do Pad Thai? That's our backup, but we're not as sensitive as some.
Second the props to glutenfreegirl.blogspot.com.
So glad that this house and this move is everything you'd hope for.

I know that feeling all too well...
When we moved from Royal Oak to Clarkston I felt horribly unhip when my brother and his wife would make the trek out from their Detroit warehouse loft to our 4 bedroom/2.5 bath track home.
Now we're in Northern CA, and I feel horribly unhip when my brother and his wife come and visit from their cool 4th street upper flat.
Ah, well. I was the cool one when we were young.

So are you originally from Michigan? Sorry if you've already said this @ some point - I'm a new reader. I'm a Michigan native-I miss everything but the snow.

Is your sister doing a whole celiac friendly wedding? Not that I'm getting married any time soon, but my mother and I had a whole disagreement about that once. I said (and I am feeling pretty firm in this) that if and when I get married... it is all GF. The entire cake. All the food. Everything. My mother seemed to think I should be happy with one piece of the cake being GF. Of course we have an awesome bakery out here where I could get a pretty durn good GF cake, so maybe that's not something you had available to y'all. :)
