Perspective

We're driving through a not-as-nice area of Detroit. I know to those who love to hate Detroit that seems like an anomaly, but it's true. Just like every other city there are not-as-nice areas of Detroit.

There's a church we pass on our way through and their inspirational sign reads:

"It could always be worse."

This seems like a bit of a stretch as far as "Inspiration" goes.

I've learned not to even utter those words, because if I do my water heater or something equally irritating and expensive will break. I do find the irony in that sign though, since Detroit is so shiny and lovely already. Good times.

I grew up in Michigan (Brighton, to be exact) and that is so appropriate for Detroit. One street is crack houses and whores, the next block is fancy houses and theaters. So bizarre. And as much as the city tries to be better it just seems to make it worst. The People Mover? wow, that worked out well. hahahaha

I grew up in Detroit as well and that sign makes me so sad...I live in LA now...Pasadena to be exact and we definately have those areas here too.

WOW, that is a stretch. Everyone seems to be low on inspiration these days.

For the most part I enjoy the inspirational pearls of wisdom I get from the church billboard while driving my daughters to school. Sometimes they are darn hilarious!

That one was rather sad though.

That is runner up to the worst inspirational words ever uttered. It is only beat by, "What's the worst that could happen?"

Words that have lead me into trouble on way too many occasions.

There are nice areas of Detroit now? Wait a minute, I learned to lock all of the doors of the car whenever we entered the city limits. Curious to see how things have changed. It's been a while since I've been in a Burger King with plexi glass between myself and the cashier...can't even find a Burger King where I live now.

Got to love the Christian spirit--glass half full even if it's half of a half of a half.

People, picking on Detroit is so 2003.

Got to love church signs. One that floored me said:

Don't be so open minded. Your brains might fall out.

Seriously???

Delurking after a looong time to offer humble praise for your blog. I can relate to a lot of what you post, especially about the dreaded "school years."
My oldest daughter is in middle school right now and her experience is a polar opposite of my days: She's pretty, popular, has boyfriends, goes to dances, etc. While I'm glad she didn't follow in my footsteps, it's all uncharted territory for me. Keep up the good work.

Driving through Indiana last weekend, somewhere outside of Indianapolis there were at least a half dozen red billboards with white type- "Focus on the positive." Stop thinking about the bad stuff and it will go away... right. The signs were posted by a city councilwoman. Wonder what SHE did.

Not to bash Detroit, I am just glad better things are happening to the city. It was a sad, empty place in the early 80s and you could tell by looking at the buildings and houses that they once were beautiful. People who don't live in the metro area don't get to see the nice places and not as nice places. It all looks kind of the same from 94.

it's people like mermaid there that make me so happy that we chose to raise our kids in detroit.

you see, it COULD always be worse. you could have to raise your kids in bloomfield hills.

Come on that is priceless!! Did you get a photo of that sign?? Post that next to a photo of Kwame and we could make tee-shirts and bumper stickers!!

Yeah, it may as well have included "it could always be better" as well! Too funny!
