10 Year Old Birthday Treats
Do you remember having a birthday in school? Your parent generally brought in a treat and you shared them with your classmates.
Usually we bring cupcakes to school to celebrate these events. However, this year, we've got a kid in Fifth Grade.
When you were in Fifth Grade, if you remember, you were the Kings and Queens of the school. You rule the most grades you will ever rule.
Middle school: you will only rise above 6th and 7th graders. High School: You'll be more than 9th, 10th, & 11th graders.
As a 5th grader you're outranking Kindergartners, 1st, 2nd, 3rd, and 4th graders. Yes!
I guess, this is the only sense I can make of all of this, if you're the King/Queen of the school you can't just have simple cupcakes to celebrate your big day. Lame.
So far, in the first three months of school we've had Individual Slurpees brought to school and another time Doughnuts. What? What happened to cupcakes. Simple sugar-filled cupcakes?
So I saw some chocolate bars at Amy Atlas's site and suggested the idea to Maddie.
Logan came up with this.
(Pardon the terrible lighting on the picture. You see winter has begun here which means there's about 2 hours of sunlight here now.)

That is so cool! Please email me and tell me how to do that. My Anna would die to have her name on a candybar.

Slurpees?! Seriously? On second thought I'm not really looking forward to 5th grade. I hope Maddie had a happy birthday!

That is fantastic! My nephew Dylan was stoked when I discovered NYC's "Dylan's Candy Bar". His Bar Mitzvah took on that theme and we had ready-made stuff with his name all over it. Awesome.

Wow! That Amy Atlas is SO talented, I'm so envious and wish I had some serious dinero so she could come for MY birthday and build me a high end dessert table. Amazing.
Did all the kids love the candy bars? Sounds like the birthday fetes' bar has been raised since I went to school. I just brought rice crispy treats and called it a day!

What a great idea! I am sure they will be a hit!!

I would have LOVED to bring cupcakes for my birthday. My mom was a little on the nutty side and always insisted we take creative food items like enchiladas to celebrate our birthdays at school. Talk about embarrassing!

holy shit you guys are the coolest parents ever! Individual slurpees?? I would have died and gone to heaven. But then again, my mother forced me to pack my own luch from first grade on, so boring old sugar filled cupcakes would have been amazing as well.

Here is a place that will make them for you. I don't know about the cost though (maybe cheaper to make your own using your printer):

Even if you don't go through them, you can get a lot of good ideas for party favors from the store!

My birthday is Dec 29th, and back in the dark ages, the schools weren't PC enough to have something for kids whose birthdays fall during vacations so I ALWAYS missed out on sharing my birthday with the class! But those candy bars are really cute!

Did you print the wrappers and put them on the bars? Which bars? What size?
Posted by: tami | 2008.11.21 at 11:01 AM
Becky - I'm with you. Our schools would allow summer birthdays to bring something in on their half birthday. But, when your bday is 6/23, your half bday is 12/23 - in the middle of winter break. I *never* got to bring treats.
But, around here now, forget about bringing anything homemade - Health Dept/DCFS regulations. It's all gotta be store-bought and packaged. Bummer.

Our school district has outlawed anything unhealthy to be sold in school or brought to school. Even the vending machines are pretty lame now. This is even for the high schools. Now instead of the highschool kids selling pot at school, they are selling candy, lol.
So I guess birthday carrot sticks would be really lame.

This was pretty simple and cheap. I created the design, printed pages with a cheap inkjet printer, trimmed the sheets, wrapped the labels around hershey bars and secured the label with tape.

Our school district has outlawed everything homemade,store-bought, or that might have been sold in the same zipcode as peanuts, or peanut oil, or peanut flour.
Enjoy the candy bars you lucky 5th graders!

I am so stealing that idea, love it!

These are sure to be a hit. Nice job.

I've been reading you for about two or three years now and am delurking to commiserate with you about having your tonsils out. I had mine out about two months ago (I'm 39) and am just now turning the corner. Hang in there, you're a trouper (on many levels).

My school is one of those "no junk food" schools, and my 5th graders would love the occasional cupcake. Personalized candy bars? They would probably kill for those.

That is so awesome.

Last year, the schools in our district started encouraging healthier eating, so were discourating cupcakes. This really threw me for a loop, since my son's b-day is right at the beginning of school, and I'd already promised he could bring them. Long story short, I brought in cupcakes, at the urging of his teacher (damn the administration - full speed ahead) and even did Red Velvet cupcakes with cream cheese frosting for Valentine's Day. (The teachers love to see me coming with my XL cupcake carrier!)
This year, we did banana muffins with crumb topping, since my son loves them. And I almost feel like they're healthy.
But, boy, was I pissed last year! I mean, do we really need to take the cupcakes away? I still bring 'em whenever I can.

You are the rockin'est parents east of where I live. Maddie is going to remember that you made her feel like Queen of 5th grade...well, she'll remember sometime after that little thing called adolescence fades. Good job, parents!

Funny, I just made cupcakes for my 3-year old son's daycare class. And I also brought in a pinata. He was over the moon about both. Ah, the simple life of a toddler. After reading your post, I am now dreading 5th grade and the creative lengths that I will have to stretch my mind.
